Victorine Lafferty Hopkins

Victorine Lafferty Hopkins, 97, a resident at Ridgefield Crossings in Ridgefield, and formerly of Sandy Hook, died March 1. She was the wife for 67 years of the late Homer Thawley Hopkins, Jr. She was born February 12, 1918, in Clayton, Del., and was the daughter of the late Ida Morris and Edwin Jackson Lafferty.

A daughter, Rebecca H. Smith, and her husband Dunham H. Smith, of Sandy Hook; two grandchildren, Kara M. Rappaport, and her husband Derek, of Pembroke, Mass., and Daniel H. Smith, and his wife Deana, of Norfolk, Mass.; three great-grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Margaret Lafferty and Jane Lafferty; and several nieces and nephews survive Mrs Hopkins.

She graduated from Dover High School in Dover, Del., and worked at the State Library in Dover for several years. She married Homer T. Hopkins, Jr, in 1940 and later moved to Beltsville, Md. She lived 55 years in Beltsville, prior to moving to Sandy Hook in 1997.

She was very active in the Woman’s Community Club of Beltsville, United Methodist Women, and Rotary Ann. She was the church secretary at Emmanuel Methodist Church in Beltsville from 1956 to 1972. She researched, wrote, and published the history of the Methodist Church in Beltsville. She enjoyed gardening, knitting and crafts, and the beach.

A memorial service will take place Saturday, March 21, at noon, at the Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road, Sandy Hook, with the Rev Mel Kawakami, senior pastor, officiating.

Arrangements are in care of the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.
