Mattatuck Museum Receives IMLS Grant

WATERBURY — The history of Waterbury’s neighborhoods will come alive for future generations thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The Mattatuck Museum has done extensive work documenting the diverse lifestyles of each neighborhood, collecting original photographs, films, memorabilia and first-person accounts.

A major exhibit, “At Home in Waterbury II,” is currently on exhibit at the museum. The show provides a fascinating glimpse into some of the work that has already been done.

The Mattatuck Museum was one of 169 organizations honored out of 933 who applied for the IMLS grant. Over $15 million was awarded to the organizations recognized this year by IMLS.

The IMLS grant will allow the museum staff to work with area educators, utilizing the massive local history archives to create new curriculum and an interactive website. The new materials will be available to students and the public.
