The Registrar of Voters Office has announced its first “I Voted” sticker design contest for Newtown students in grades 5-12.

Students are invited to show off their talents and design their own “I Voted” artwork that will be featured on two-inch stickers and handed out to voters at Newtown elections this fall.

Artwork for the contest must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office, within Newtown Municipal Center, by May 1. Entries need to include the student’s first and last name, age, grade, and school in addition to the original design.

Student submissions will be divided into three different age groups for the contest: grades 5-6, grades 7-8, and grades 9-12. One winner will be chosen from each age group.

Democratic Registrar LeReine Frampton said the local Office of Registrar of Voters was inspired by Windham’s “I Voted” sticker design contest for last year’s election.

“The town of Windham started this last year, and we thought it sounded like something good to get people aware and excited for the upcoming election,” Frampton told The Newtown Bee. “It also reminds parents to go out as well and to get them involved.”

Students must live in Newtown in order to participate in the contest. All artwork must include the year 2024 and the words “I Voted” in their design. Artwork must be Newtown-themed and the student’s original artwork. Designs cannot be political and need to be drawn in the sticker template provided by the Registrar of Voters.

Republican Registrar Erica Canfield believes that having the “I Voted” stickers be designed by students in town helps personalize them.

“Every school is gonna pass out a different sticker. I think it’ll be nice to have our own stickers from members in the community. It just personalizes it more,” Canfield said.

Frampton and Canfield say that if the contest is popular this year, they will keep holding it in the future.
