Stay Committed To

Substance Abuse Prevention

To the Editor:

We would like to express our sincere thanks for the outstanding response from the Newtown community regarding the efforts of the Parent Connection. We have been overwhelmed with the support extended by all citizens concerned about the issue of preventing substance use and abuse in our town. The fruits of everyone’s time and attention to this critical subject are being realized.

The Newtown Parent Connection needs to thank the following: Shane McCarthy, Newtown Youth Services, Wendy Davenson, Ginger and Larry Katz, Officers Andy Stintson and Dana Schubert, members of the school system, and all the numerous volunteers who have worked behind the scenes to assist in continuing the positive momentum begun in September.

Our plea is that the community maintains a commitment to the prevention efforts that proven successful. Please keep coming to the Parent Connection forums. On Wednesday, March 24, there will be a talk entitled, “Prescription Medication Or Drug of Abuse?” Representatives from Perdue Pharma, the manufacturer of the drug OxyContin, will deliver a compelling talk, as will our own Drug Center pharmacists in discussing over-the-counter medications. We realize there is a conflict on that date with the Legislative Council meeting and the discussion of the Board of Education budget. We ask that you endorse the budget in order for the school system to optimize their services to the youth of Newtown. You can express your endorsement of the budget by emailing or writing the Legislative Council members prior to the March 24 meeting. A listing of members names and addresses can be found on the town website, www.newtown-ct.gov. Those letters will be included in the minutes of the Legislative Council meeting. In this way, your voice will be heard and you can still attend the Parent Connection Forum if you so choose.

Upcoming forums include: “Kids Speak Out!” on Wednesday, April 14, and “Alcohol & the Law” on May 10. Please join our Hope and Support Group meetings every Monday night at Youth Services’ Parents Corner. This is a safe and confidential place for parents to seek guidance and support. There is a wonderful facilitator who leads this drop-in group, so please consider stopping in if you have any questions or concerns you would like to vent. Parents can come by any time between 7:30 and 9:30 pm each and every Monday night.

If anyone has questions concerning the Newtown Parent Connection or its mission, we urge you to call us at 426-6424, 426-9280; or email at newtownparentconnection@hotmail.com. We invite you to visit our website at www.geocities.com/newtownparentconnection for news and event information.

Our sincerest appreciation to all in this wonderful community,

Dorrie Carolan, Donna DeLuca
