A firefighter stands next to Newtown Hook & Ladder Engine 1 on Sunday, March 15, the second of a two-day class on drafting and tanker shuttle operations. Dodgingtown Volunteer Fire Company hosted the class, which was led by two instructors from Connecticut Fire Academy. Sixteen firefighters from Dodgingtown, Hawleyville, Sandy Hook, Southbury, and Stony Hill attended a classroom session on Saturday, March 14, according to Dodgingtown Chief Steve Murphy. Those firefighters and additional members of Botsford, Newtown Hook & Ladder, and West Redding then put everything into practice on Sunday, using apparatus from all eight companies. Chief Murphy considered it a productive class. “A successful class would have flowed 500 gallons a minute through a tanker shuttle for two hours, continuously, without losing water,” he said March 18. “We did 800 gallons a minute.” —photo courtesy Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company
