Aaron A. Schefkind, 93, of Newtown, died March 18 in St Josephâs Manor, Trumbull. He was the husband of Christina (Mainiero) Schefkind.
He was born in Port Jefferson, N.Y., on October 4, 1910, a son of the late Joel and Ethel M. (Sachs) Schefkind. He was a graduate of Middlebury College, with a bachelorâs degree, and from Yale University, with a masterâs degree, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
For more than 30 years, he was the owner and headmaster of the University College Preparatory School in Bridgeport. He was a lifelong advocate for the physically challenged and in his earlier years was a competitive swimmer.
A resident of Newtown for 30 years, he was a 32nd degree Mason, a longtime member of Hiram Lodge #18 A.F. & A.M. in Sandy Hook, and over the years held a number of positions in Masonry. He was a world traveler and a Civil War buff.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Dr Judith Gross of Oxford, and Joyce Neri of Sandy Hook, and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by six brothers and sisters including the late Sara Rothkopf of Danbury.
Funeral services were held March 21 in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. Interment will be in Newtown Village Cemetery in the Spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Hiram Lodge #18 A.F. & A.M., 3 Washington Avenue, Sandy Hook CT 06482.
