NEW HAVEN â A stellar diving season ended at the CIAC State Open for CJ Maurer and Steve Truitt of Newtown High School.
Maurer (the 2003-04 South-West Conference champion) finished fifth with 335.10 points while Truitt (who narrowly missed qualifying for the Opens last year, but earned an opportunity this year) finished 14th with 299.75 points.
Daniel Mazzaferro of Cheshire earned the Open title with an 11-dive effort of 442.40 points. Mark Gilbert of Fitch, Devon OâNalty of East Hartford, and Stephen Ferreira of Hand all followed. Ferreira finished just 3/10ths of a point ahead of Maurer.
Maurer and Truitt, together, scored 21 points and enabled Newtown to finish 29th as a team. Greenwich earned the team title with 429 points while Notre Dame of West Haven and Amity Regional of Woodbridge came in second and third.
Brookfield, the 2003-04 SWC champs, finished 11th with 90.5 points and Pomperaug finished 17th with 40 points.
In the CIAC Class L finals recently, Newtown finished ninth overall with 131 points (Notre Dame of West Haven was the Class L champion and perennial powerhouse Cheshire was second).
Individually â
The 200 medley relay team of Zack Moliver, Andrew Heller, Jake Maher and Chris Jacob finished ninth at 1:46.28 and in the 200 freestyle, Jacob was 12th at 1:54.89. In the 200 individual medley, Heller finished 15th at 2:09.74 (two seconds off his preliminary time). In the 100 butterfly, Heller was ninth at 55.32 and in the 100 freestyle, Jacob was 17th at 51.98.
In the 200 freestyle relay, the foursome of Dave LaMarche, Maurer, Maher and Truitt was 11th at 1:39.03 and in the 100 backstroke, Moliver was 16th at 1:00.53. In the 100 breaststroke, Maher was 13th at 1:06.66 and in the 400 freestyle relay, the foursome of Jacob, LaMarche, Heller and Moliver was 11th at 3:33.81.
And in diving, CJ Maurer finished fifth at 365.25 points while Steve Truitt was eighth at 313.65. Bryan Lacouture finished 10th at 299.25 points and Lauren Borruso came in 18th at 256.20 points.
