DANBURY – The Housatonic Valley Classic, featuring five of the top professional cycling teams, will be held Sunday, May 20. Wheelworks/Cannondale – an amateur team with riders from Bethel, New Fairfield, and Southbury – will also compete.

The race will begin in Danbury and competitors will race through the 10 towns of the Housatonic Valley on a clockwise circuit of 140 miles. The race will speed north along Candlewood Lake, pass through Sherman and New Milford, cross the old expansion bridge in Bridgewater, spring through Brookfield Center, round the flagpole in Newtown, and skirt the Memorial Day parade in Bethel.

The top five professional teams competing include Jet Fuel Cycling of Canada, and Mercury Cycling, Navigators Pro Cycling, Saturn Cycling, and 7-Up/Colorado Cycling all of the United States.

Competing for Wheelworks/ Cannondale are Peter Baker of New Fairfield, Curt Davis of Bethel and Chris Peck of Southbury.

“The Housatonic Valley Classic will be one of the longest and most grueling races in North America,” said John Eustice of Sparta Cycling.

Most towns will have an official spectator viewing site, scheduled festivites, and a town sprint. The race is sponsored by the Housatonic Valley Tourism District.
