Parade Committee Announces Grand Marshal For 2010

By Nancy K. Crevier

Preparations for the 2010 Newtown Labor Day Parade are underway, said Beth Caldwell, president of the Newtown Labor Day Parade Committee. The group has been meeting since January and is looking forward to another spectacular event on Monday, September 6.

Committee treasurer and Newtown Savings Bank Assistant Vice President Brian Amey announced Tuesday, March 23, that for the second year in a row the bank will be sponsoring the fall parade as a platinum sponsor, with a donation of $3,000. The committee looks forward to the continued support of other local businesses and organizations, as well.

Ms Caldwell said that the committee has named longtime Newtown resident Marge Rogers as the Grand Marshal for the 2010 parade.

“This year’s theme for the parade is ‘On Stage In Newtown.’ Marge has been with the Little Theatre here in town for 45 years, and with the Town Players celebrating their 75th anniversary in 2010, she seemed like a good choice,” said Ms Caldwell.

“We’re going to be building on our success of last year, of shortening up the parade,” she said, “but are still looking to highlight lots of floats from local businesses and clubs. Hopefully, they will all reflect this year’s theme.”

To become a sponsor, to volunteer, or to find out how to enter a float in the 2010 Newtown Labor Day Parade, contact Robin Buchanan at 203-426-6195.

As always, the committee depends on the generous donations of residents and businesses to offset the more than $25,000 that it costs to present the annual end of summer parade. Donations can be mailed to Newtown Savings Bank, 28 Main Street, Newtown CT 06470, attention Brian Amey, Labor Day Parade.
