Carriero Hits Grand Slam, Drives In Eight Runs In Nighthawk Softball Squad Triumph

Newtown High School's softball team began the season with a 21-2 triumph over host Darien on March 30. Angela Carriero drove in more than a third of the Nighthawk runs, knocking in eight with a grand slam, two-run double, and two-run single. Carriero also scored four runs.

The Nighthawks had 13 hits and worked nine walks. The first three Newtown batters each earned base on balls, setting the tone for the game.

Madelyn Winzig went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and a run scored. Ryssa Swanson was 2-for-5, including a double, drove in two runs, and scored twice.

Sienna Cummings had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Jackie Moccio and Katie Goyda each scored three times. Kendra Saunders and Kim Buttery both crossed home plate twice.

Shauna Tucker earned the win in the pitcher's circle. She allowed seven hits, struck out three, and did not walk a batter.

The Nighthawks will host Ridgefield on Saturday, April 6 at noon.
