The organizer of a special movie screening that took place last month at Edmond Town Hall has announced another similar event.

Pilgrim’s Progress: Journey to Heaven, a movie from DRC films, will be screened at the historic building at 45 Main Street on Sunday, April 23, at 4 pm.

For more than two centuries after its publication in 1678, Pilgrim’s Progress ranked just behind the King James Bible as the most commonly bought and read book. The story has been studied as an example of 17th Century literature and is considered by many as one of the greatest allegories ever written in the English language.

Author John Bunyan wrote the sophisticated story while in prison despite his lack of formal education. His imprisonment was because of his faithfulness to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Six years later he published a second part, Book 2, which is less known but considered by many to be even greater than the first.

The 2008 movie adaptation is a modern retelling of John Bunyan’s classic tale of the first book.

Similar to how Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia have made their way from classic books to entertaining films, Director Daniel Carrales depicts Pilgrim’s Progress as true to form as possible within the scope of one feature length film.

The story focuses on the main character, Christian (played by Daniel Kruse), burdened with guilt and remorse as a citizen of the City of Destruction after reading a book that tells of coming judgment. Along his journey to the Celestial City he encounters many vivid characters that allegorically depict both challenges and encouragements that mirror trying to live a life of faithfulness to God.

Pilgrim’s Progress has a running time of 1 hour, 45 minutes.

The special event is free and open to all. A free raffle of books and DVDs will be conducted right before the start of the show.

The theater is allowing guests to bring their own snacks and drinks if they prefer but will also provide an open concession stand for anyone wanting to purchase snacks, candy, popcorn, and/or drinks.

The movie event is sponsored by Jesse Rebar, who can be contacted for additional information at jessrebar@gmail.com.

For the second consecutive month, Edmond Town Hall will host a free screening of a Christian film. —DRC Productions poster
