Newtown State Rep Mitch Bolinsky has issued a reminder that last month, when the General Assembly passed legislation to suspend the state's 25-cent gas tax lawmakers also added a Sales Tax Free Week this spring.

The spring Sales Tax Free Week begins Sunday, April 10, and runs through Saturday, April 16.

Tax Free Week was first enacted in 2000, and applies to most clothing and footwear purchases that are intended for everyday use.

Goods not covered under the program include items that are solely intended for use in sporting activities and accessories such as jewelry, watches, handbags, and wallets, he said.

Connecticut’s one-week sales and use tax holiday applies to each eligible item of clothing or footwear sold for less than $100, regardless of how many items are sold to a customer on the same invoice.

Bolinsky explained that sales tax is calculated on the final sales price of an item, after all reductions and coupons are applied. Items that cost $100 or more are subject to sales and use tax for the entire price of that item.

Also note that an article of clothing or footwear costing less than $100 that is purchased during the exclusion week using a rain check is not taxable. If a retailer issues a rain check to a customer during the exclusion week for an article of clothing or footwear costing less than $100 and the customer purchases the item after the exclusion week has ended using the rain check, the item is taxable.

And if a retailer offers “buy one, get one free” or “two for the price of one” on items of clothing or footwear during the exclusion week, the exemption applies as long as the total sales price for each item is less than $100.
