Purse Found

Newtown Police report on March 22, a citizen turned in a purse that had been located across the street from the Botsford Hill Road Post Office. Anyone with information can contact Sgt Wisentaner at 203-426-5841.

Hit Tree, Flipped Car

Newtown Police report Edward Carroll, 87, of Newtown, operating a 2021 Toyota Venza, was traveling northbound on Poverty Hollow Road at 2:30 pm March 25. Carroll’s vehicle ran off the left hand side of the roadway and into a tree. The vehicle rolled over at impact but landed on all four tires.

Carroll was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment. The vehicle was towed.

Carroll received a verbal warning for failure to drive right.

Car Hit Crossing Main Street

Newtown Police report Patrick McCleary, 53, of Newtown, operating a 2014 Honda Crosstour, was traveling southbound on Main Street at 12:21 pm March 26. Annika Fogal, 17, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2015 Toyota RAV4, was stopped on Church Hill Road at the intersection of Main Street. Police say Fogal entered the intersection, crossed over Main Street and was continuing onto West Street. McCleary was in the process of passing stopped southbound traffic when the front of his vehicle made contact with the rear passenger side tire of Fogal’s vehicle, causing damage to both vehicles.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

McCleary received a verbal warning for passing on the right.

Missed Branch, Hit Tree

Newtown Police report Ashley Wood, 18, of New Fairfield, operating a 2008 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling westbound on a curve on Jacklin Road at 5:34 pm March 26. Wood told police she attempted to avoid a branch in the road and turned to the right to avoid it. Police say she was unable to gain control of the vehicle, turned left exited the road off the left shoulder. The front end of her vehicle struck a tree.

Wood declined transport to Danbury Hospital in spite of a possible injury. Her vehicle was towed.

Wood was issued an infraction for failure to stay right on a curve.

Honda Rear-Ended

Newtown Police report Emily Slavick, 27, of Bethel, operating a 2021 Honda CR-V, was traveling west on Church Hill Road at 10:50 am March 28. She was behind a 2017 Honda Accord operated by Madeline Merkel, 18, of Brookfield, who was stopped for traffic ahead. Police say Slavick failed to stop and the front of her vehicle made contact with the rear of Merkel’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Slavick was given a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Hit Deer

Newtown Police report Jermin Barker, 29, of Bethel, operating a 2013 Honda Pilot, was traveling northbound on Hattertown Road at 8:38 pm March 28. A deer crossed the road and collided with Barker’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Struck Electrical Box

Newtown Police report Grant Ricks, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Mazda 6, was traveling eastbound on Elm Drive at 7:47 am March 29. Northbound and southbound vehicles on South Main Street stopped to allow Ricks to turn northbound onto South Main Street, and Ricks made a wide left turn and the front right corner of his vehicle struck a fixed electrical box located off the shoulder northbound.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Ricks was issued a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Hit Utility Pole

Newtown Police report Kathryn Lukach, 34, of Easton, operating a 2010 Honda CR-V, was traveling near the intersection of Jordan Hill Road and Berkshire Road at 9:08 am March 29, when she says a large, non-involved truck crossed the center line, forcing her to swerve. Police say Lukach lost control of her vehicle, causing it to strike a utility pole.

No injuries were reported at the scene. The vehicle was towed.

Lukach was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Collided With Parked Car

Newtown Police report Thomas Lapine, 82, of Danbury, operating a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan, was traveling southbound on Main Street at 1:17 am March 30. An unoccupied 2021 GMC 1500 owned by Andrew Kraus was parked on the southbound shoulder of Main Street, and Lapine’s vehicle struck the rear of Kraus’ vehicle.

Police say Lapine was transported to Danbury Hospital for evaluation and possible injuries. Lapine’s vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Information Sought On Collision

Newtown Police report that they received a report of a two car motor vehicle accident at the corner of Wasserman Way and the exit 11 commuter lot at 3:23 pm March 30, involving a white Pontiac Vibe and a grey Hyundai Elantra. Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Officer Ben Mulhall at the Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841.

Passing On The Right

Newtown Police report B.R. Haughton, 63, of Hopewell Junction. N,Y., operating a 2023 Nissan Murano, was traveling southbound on Main Street, approaching the intersection of Church Hill Road at 8:03 am March 31. A 2021 Toyota Tacoma operated by Emily Perkins, 27, of Ansonia, was stopped on Church Hill Road at the intersection of Main Street. Police say Haughton was in the process of passing a stopped southbound vehicle when Perkins entered the intersection to cross over Main Street and proceed onto West Street. The front of Haughton’s vehicle made contact with the passenger side of Perkins’ vehicle, causing damage to both.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Haughton was issued a written warning for passing on the right.

Struck Gas Pumps

Newtown Police report Thomas Mavaro, 62, of Stevenson, operating a 2017 Toyota Tacoma, was backing from a marked parking spot in the parking lot of 26 Hawleyville Road at 12:57 pm March 31. Police say the rear of the vehicle made contact with gas pumps 1 and 2, causing mechanical damage to both.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Blerta Morina, 19, of Newtown, operating a 2003 Honda CR-V, was traveling southbound on South Main Street at 1:47 pm April 1. She was traveling behind a 2018 Infiniti Qx60 operated by Michelle DeCarlo, 44, of Newtown. Police say DeCarlo stopped in the area of Ethan Allen Road for traffic ahead. The front of Morina’s vehicle made contact with the rear of DeCarlo’s.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Morina was issued a written warning for following too close.

Collision In Parking Lot

Newtown Police report Carla Tischio, 52, of Newtown, operating a 2020 GMC Canyon, was pulling into a parking spot in the parking lot at 5 Queen Street at 1:54 pm April 1. A 2011 Honda Pilot operated by James Kilkenny, 61, of Newtown, was parked crooked in a parking spot to the right. Police say Tischio pulled straight into the parking spot and the right front corner of his vehicle collided with the left corner of Kilkenny’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Failure To Maintain Lane

Newtown Police report Mark Lefferts, 64, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2012 Dodge Ram, was traveling westbound on Glover Avenue at 6:46 am April 3. Lefferts crossed the centerline and struck a crosswalk sign by the intersection of Glover Avenue and Meadow Road. Lefferts told police he was trying to make space for a jogger in the roadway.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Lefferts was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain a lane.

No License, No Insurance

Newtown Police report Benjamin Wilkins, 40, of Waterbury, was arrested at 6:25 pm April 3 on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle without proper insurance and illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of April 19.
