To the Editor:

I am writing to express my support of the “For the People Act” and encourage our Senators to support the bill in Congress. While Connecticut and other states enjoy a handful of voting rights expansion such as public campaign financing, a federal law would not only help expand rights for our state, but for the nation as a whole.

The bill expands voting rights in multiple ways such as requiring states to offer same day voter-registration and allow voters to make changes to their registration while at the polls. It also establishes automatic voter registration that can be completed online and would allow 16-17-year-olds to “pre-register” to vote. From my time in Newtown High School, I know many young people would like to have their voices heard and this would be a great way to introduce civic engagement to them. Further, the changes for voter registration would not come out of our pocket as the bill provides funds to help states update voter registration processes.

Voter registration isn’t the only thing covered in this bill; it also reforms campaign financing and improves election security. Any readers who want to get involved should call 888-453-3211. This number will direct you to Senator Blumenthal’s or Murphy’s office phone number, where you can leave a message about the “For the People Act.”

Thank you for your consideration,

Cassie Cauwels
