“Here’s to Painting,” featuring original work by 12 artists under the tutelage of retired middle school art teacher Claudia Mitchell, will be at Newtown Municipal Center Art Gallery through the end of May.

The Art Gallery space — the central corridor within the municipal building at 3 Primrose Street — is open weekdays from 8:30 am-4:30 pm, as well as late whenever there is a meeting at the Municipal Center. The gallery is managed and curated by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission.

Though most of the group is from Newtown, the membership reaches to Trumbull and Southbury. The show features art by Mitchell as well as Liz Arneth, Tracy Fiore, Evelyn Flaim, Meg Gioffe, Martha Glynn, Lynn Klar, Arlene Kreinik, Ellen Mcnamara, Una Nash, Maureen Rohmer, Michelle Rosenthal, and Kelly Urso.

A reception is set for the “Here’s to Painting ” exhibition on Saturday, April 18, from 2-4 pm. The public is invited to view the collection over light refreshments. Many of the artists plan to attend as well.

“We’ve been working together a long time,” Mitchell noted. “These are amazing people. Even during the worst of the pandemic, we Zoomed.”

Much of the art is watercolors with a few pastels also shown.

The art includes iconic scenes from Newtown and well beyond as well as still lifes, portraits, and streetscapes.

Liz Arneth said Mitchell “is such a wonderful teacher who takes us all to amazing creative places.”
