Women’s Softball Signups

The Newtown Women’s softball league will be having sign-ups in the upcoming week. Registration will be done by mail. Forms for signing up your team members will be located at several businesses – Karen’s Fitness Center, Yankee Discount Liquor Store, The Cyrenius Booth Library, Firehouse Eatery & Tap Room and Heirloom Creations. Any woman 18 years or older, living/working in Newtown is eligible to sign up. All new players are welcome. A $10 registration fee applies. If there are questions, please call Jody Murphy at 270-1776. Also, there will be a mandatory coaches meeting on Sunday, May 4, at 7:30 pm, at the Firehouse Eatery in Sandy Hook.

Softball (U14) Tryouts

The Newtown Heat traveling softball team is scheduling tryouts for the 2003 season. Newtown residency is not required. Call 426-5001 or 426-1886 for further information on the tryouts.

City Center Grand Prix

The City Center Grand Prix – a race for miniature cars attained speeds of 25 miles an hour – will be held on June 8 on the streets of Danbury. The Grand Prix will be the focal point of a daylong festival on the Danbury green featuring food, kids games, racecar displays, and live music. WRKI-FM (I-95) will present the festival, which will benefit the American Red Cross of Western Connecticut.

 

WCSU Basketball Camp

The women’s basketball program at Western Connecticut State University will be sponsoring its 2003 Girls’ Basketball Hoop Camp July 28 through August 1, 9 am to 3:30 pm each day. Namath Football Camp

The annual Joe Namath/John Dockery Instructional Football Camp will be held July 6-11 at Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts. A host of current and former National Football League players and coaches will be on hand. Call 1-866-626-2841 or email joenamath@hotmail.com for further information.

Ted Alex Memorial Golf

The 20th annual Ted Alex Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, June 14, at 8 am, at the Fair View Farms Golf Course in Harwinton. The tournament is held to honor the legendary educator and coach who died of cancer in 1984. To register, call Newport National at 1-401-848-9690 or contact Matt Adams at mattadams422@aol.com.

Frisbee Foundation Golf

The Richard D. Frisbee, III Foundation will be holding its 12th Annual Golf Classic on Thursday May 8, at the Stanwich Club, in Greenwich. It will be a four man best-ball tournament with prizes awarded to the first and second place winning teams in both gross and net scoring. A luncheon will be served prior to play, and an awards buffet and cocktail party will take place at the end of the day. There will also be a raffle and sports-related auction. Slamma Jamma Camp

The Slamma Jamma Basketball Camp will be offered in Newtown and Bethel this summer. The Newtown camp will be held July 7-11 at the Edmond Town Hall. Session I for girls and boys ages 7-13 will meet from 9 am to 3 pm and Session II for boys and girls 5-9 will meet from 9 am to 12:30 pm. The camp will concentrate on the fundamentals with games, contests, individual and team skills. Bob Ruderman (former Mattatuck Community College coach) and Art Leary (head coach at Southern Connecticut State University) will direct the camp.
