Sandy Hook Thefts

Police are investigating a string of nighttime thefts that occurred in Sandy Hook on Great Quarter Road and Loveland Drive. The two residential roads are off Route 34, near the Monroe town line.

The overall value of the stolen items stolen was approximately $600.

Police said that sometime between 11 pm on April 18, and 8 am on April 19, someone entered four unlocked vehicles, which were parked in four driveways along the two streets.

Items stolen included coins, a satellite radio receiver, a tennis racket, and a leather jacket.

Police ask anyone with information about the thefts to contact Officer Robert Haas at the police station at 426-5841.

Rear-End Collision

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Riverside Road at its intersection with Cherry Street about 6:08 pm April 25.

Police said motorist Carolyn Gingras, 17, of 14 Black Cherry Lane, who was driving a 2003 Hyundai XG-350 sedan, was traveling on Riverside Road and then stopped in preparing to turn onto Cherry Street, when the Hyundai was struck from behind by motorist Robert Fath, 66, of Montgomery, N.Y., who was driving a 1989 Jeep SUV.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Fath for following too closely.

Ford Vs Honda

Police report that at about 11:50 am on April 23, motorist Susan MacMullan, 43, of 12 Fox Run Lane South, who was driving a 2004 Honda Pilot SUV, was stopped and waiting at a stop sign on Peck’s Lane at its intersection with South Main Street.

At that time, motorist Jennifer Belcolore-Arguello, 31, of 46 Jeremiah Road was driving a 2008 Ford Edge SUV southward on South Main Street, according to police.

The Ford then attempted to turn left onto Peck’s Lane, but collided with the Honda, police report. There were no injuries. Police issued Belcolore-Arguello a written warning for making an improper turn.

South Main Crash

Motorist Christopher Veness, 20, of 3 Prospect Drive, who was driving a 2007 Scion coupe southward on South Main Street about 4:13 pm April 25, stopped near 129 South Main Street in attempting to make a left turn onto Prospect Drive, police said.

Southbound motorist Thomas Pozvek, 54, of Monroe, who was driving a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck, then drove into the rear end of the Scion, according to police.

There were no injuries. Pozvek received a written warning for following too closely.

Mountain Manor

A parked, unoccupied 2002 Honda CRV, which was located in the driveway at 31 Mountain Manor Road about 5:30 pm April 23, had an emergency brake failure, after which the vehicle rolled downhill northward on the road before passing through some vegetation and coming to rest in a ditch in front of 27 Mountain Manor Road, police report.

There were no injuries in the mishap. Police took no enforcement against the Brookfield woman who owns the Honda.

High Speed

State police report that using laser speed detection equipment, they measured the speed of motorist William Ford, 48, of 67 Charter Ridge Road at 112 miles per hour at about 1:20 am April 27 on eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 10.

State police said they stopped Ford and arrested him without incident on a charge of reckless driving.

After he posted $500 bail, Ford was released for a May 12 arraignment on the charge at Danbury Superior Court, state police report.

Highway DUI

State police report that they observed motorist James A. Boyd, III, 21, of Danbury driving a vehicle westward on Interstate 84, near Exit 11, but not staying in his travel lane at about 12:15 am April 27, so they stopped him to investigate.

After giving him field sobriety tests, state police charged Boyd with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the established lane.

Boyd was released on $500 bail for a May 12 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Items Stolen

Sometime overnight on April 16/17, someone went through the contents of several unlocked vehicles that were parked in residential driveways in the Shepaug Road area of Shady Rest, in seeking to steal items of value, police said. Only two keys were stolen, police said. Police urge residents to keep their vehicles locked when unattended to prevent thefts. Residents with questions about security may contact police at 426-5841.

Multiple Charges

While conducting speed enforcement, police stopped motorist Kimberly M. Rosenthal, 24, of 13 Gopher Road on Currituck Road, near its intersection with Stony Brook Road, about 10:50 am April 23.

Police said they charged her with traveling too fast for conditions, driving with a suspended license, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said a records check indicated that Rosenthal also was wanted on a warrant by Ridgefield police in connection with a November 2007 incident in Ridgefield. Newtown police said Rosenthal was then additionally charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, driving with a suspended license, and illegal use of a handheld cellphone while driving.

Police said Rosenthal posted $1,000 bail for a May 8 court appearance.

Diamond

Police reported this week that a small diamond gemstone was found inside the Citgo gas station at 151 South Main Street. Anyone with information about who owns the gem may contact police at 426-5841. The reference number for the case is 9708-4457.

DUI Charge

Police said motorist Brian Lipofsky, 35, of Monroe was driving a vehicle on Castle Hill Road, near Pumpkin Lane, about 9 pm April 28, when the vehicle went off the road and down an embankment. Lipofsky was not injured, according to police.

After investigating, police charged Lipofsky with driving under the influence and with making a restricted turn. Police released him on $100 bail for a May 13 court appearance.

Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Wasserman Way and Berkshire Road about 8 am April 23.

In that collision, motorist Raneane DaCosta Moreira Silva, 25, of Danbury, who was driving a 2000 GMC Jimmy SUV, struck the rear end of a 2004 Buick Park Avenue sedan driven by Karen Fernandez, 51, of Middlebury, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Silva an infraction ticket on charges of failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and driving without a license.

Jewelry Found

Police said that at 3:50 pm on April 26, they received for safekeeping a gold ring which holds a diamond. The item was found at the Newtown High School baseball field, police said. The ring bears an inscription. The owner may claim it by contacting Sergeant Darlene Froehlich at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 426-5841.

DUI Arrest

Police report they received a call about 12:54 pm on April 26 reporting that a motorist was driving erratically on Queen Street, so they went to the area to investigate.

Police said they located the driver in the parking lot at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street and investigated.

Police said they charged motorist Kathleen Mercaldi, 39, of Southbury with driving under the influence. Mercaldi was additionally charged with risk of injury to a minor because the vehicle that she was driving contained a passenger under age 16, police said.

Police released Mercaldi on a written promise to appear May 13 in Danbury Superior Court.

School Bus

Police report a school bus accident about 6:40 am April 29 at the western intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Saw Mill Road. There were no injuries.

Motorist Mary Ruffles, 75, of 2 Saw Mill Road, who was driving a 2007 Kia Optima, was waiting at the end of her driveway and attempting to enter the eastbound lane of Mt Pleasant Road, police said.

At that time, a 2002 Bluebird school bus driven by Melinda Leigh Jaehn, 29, of 57 Taunton Lake Road, which was carrying 12 students, was traveling eastward on Mt Pleasant Road, police said.

The Kia then exited the driveway and collided with the school at the intersection of Saw Mill Road and Mt Pleasant Road, police said. Ruffles received an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way, according to police.
