Business Buzz: Old Glory Days

Business name: Old Glory Days

Address: 107 Church Hill Road

Owner: Emily Slattery

Business background: I’ve been working with seniors for more than a decade now. I started working in nursing homes as a social worker doing discharge planning, which means when someone was going home after being there for short-term rehab, I would help set up services. That’s how I learned about what resources were available.

I officially opened Old Glory Days in 2013 in Southbury. We had started in a house, because I wanted it to be in a home-setting. Then I found this location that we moved into in August of 2015, and we’ve really enjoyed being in Sandy Hook. It’s a nice space here.

Recently, we have expanded our services to include having someone come in to give haircuts if needed, having a podiatrist come in, and we have started doing aroma therapy with essential oils. In terms of activities, we have also started having an entertainer come in once a month to sing and play guitar.

Business focus: Old Glory Days is a social-model adult day center. People can come for the day to do activities. We also have a nurse here on site, offer transportation services, and have meals that we get from Newtown Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

People can sign up and pick the hours that work best for them that will give them the most benefits of socializing and give the family member, who’s the caregiver, a break.

We have a variety of activities like Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, and Bingo, as well as adult coloring books, puzzles, and arts & crafts. We have an instructor come in on Wednesdays for chair yoga, and we also do darts, bean bag toss, and indoor mini golf to help them stay active. Now that it is nice again, we also spend time outside.

Important to know: We’re much smaller than other adult day centers and have a home-like setting. The home environment helps so they are not overstimulated or agitated, because people with memory impairment can be overwhelmed the more that is going on.

Here they are comfortable and can feel that they are home — they can sit where they want to sit, do the activities they like do to. We have a high staff ratio, too, so they can get a lot of attention.

Near future promotions: Currently, our Double Your Days promotion is taking place, where you sign up for two days and get four days. The promotion will last until the end of May.

Hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm; and Saturday upon request.
