The oversized works of two Newtown resident artists are on view at Newtown Municipal Center Art Gallery through May 27.

Newtown Cultural Arts Commission is hosting the presentation, which features paintings by the abstractionist painter Stephanie Adam and the realistic painter Carol Gaulin-McKenzie. The Gallery is open weekdays during regular business hours as well as late when a town board or commission meeting is scheduled.

Color is the essential element in the work of Stephanie Adam.

“I also explore a variety of tones while building and layering textural qualities, often contrasting matte with glossed surfaces,” the artist has stated.

Adam’s work has been exhibited in Connecticut museums as well as the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her work is also in the permanent collections of Coopers and Lybrand Industries, Exxon-Mobil Corp, Hoffman Architects, Houbigant Perfume, and Pharmor Corporation.

Her first solo exhibition was in 2004 in the meeting room at C.H. Booth Library.

Gaulin-McKenzie’s paintings are life-size figures inspired by her own photos or those taken by her husband or friends.

“Though realistic, they are made out of a variety of papers, fabric and materials that I select for the basic colors,” she noted. Gaulin-McKenzie then adds materials that enhance the paintings and give them depth.

Each artist has twelve paintings on view.
