Give Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team a high five. The Nighthawks, in holding their past handful of opponents to an average of a little more than five goals per game, made it five wins in a row and improved to 9-2 overall, heading into a May 8 scheduled visit to Notre Dame-Fairfield.

The Nighthawks defeated visiting Bethel 14-6 at Treadwell Park on May 6. They’ve given up six or fewer goals seven times this spring, something Coach Glenn Adams knows gives his team a good chance for a win on any given day.

“The offense is coming along. We’re really doing the job defensively,” Adams said.

Something else Adams is pleased with is the fact his team finds a way to win even when the legs are tired. Newtown has won consecutive games on back to back days twice this season, most recently an April 30 9-7 win over Hall of West Hartford and an 11-3 triumph over Norwalk the next day.

“The fact we were able to get those wins is big,” Adams said.

What has also been significant is the team’s success against tough nonconference foes. In addition to beating Hall, Newtown doubled up East Lyme 8-4 on April 26, and got by Xavier of Middletown 9-6 on May 3.

Newtown got two goals each from Logan Walsh and Jared Pearson in the win over Xavier. Jake Ball scored a goal and added a trio of assists, and Ryan Sullivan and Bubba Condon each had a goal and an assist. Goaltender Jon Rospenda is a significant part of the defense’s success. He stopped nine Xavier shots and allowed only one to get past him in the second half as the Hawks turned a halftime 5-5 tie into a win.

In the victory over Bethel, Ball scored three and added four assists, Condon netted three goals as well, and Matt Meyers hit the back of the net once and picked up three helpers. Cameron Partrick scooped five ground balls and CJ Dunn had four in the win.

Adams said the approach is to take things one game at a time and continue to improve. Following the Notre Dame game, the Hawks have four more regular season tilts on the slate before embarking on the playoffs. They’ll visit Glastonbury at noon on Saturday, May 10 then return home for the first of three games when Stratford visits Blue & Gold Stadium for a 7 pm faceoff on May 14.
