Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ track and field teams experienced some success in their meets this week as the competitors work toward spots in the South-West Conference and state championship meets.

The girls visited Bunnell High in Stratford on May 5 and earned three wins, defeating the host Bulldogs 106.5-43.5, Notre Dame-Fairfield 140-10, and Lauralton Hall of Milford 137-13.

The boys, in a home meet at Blue & Gold Stadium on May 6, beat Notre Dame 115-25 and fell to Bunnell as the Bulldogs scored 81.5 and Newtown had 68.5. The Nighthawks had several standout efforts. Results are as follows:

“We continue to improve in a number of areas, especially in the throws and open 400 — seeing improvement in our jumping events where a number of newer girls are starting to perform well. We have a number of girls qualified for SWCs and state Class LLs. They are a hardworking group and continue to improve,” said Coach Doug Russell, whose squad improved to 9-0.

Boys

4x100: 2. Jason Ferrari, Will Roman, Tristan Pears, and Matt Mossbarger 50.3.

4x800: 1. Ethan Burg, Kyle Mangold, David Csordas, and Christopher Gamble 8:51.7.

110 Hurdles: Sam Boland and George Ferris finished in the top three with times of 17.1 and 18.2 respectively.

100: Will Roman paced the Nighthawks with a time of 11.6 and qualified for the SWC championships.

1600: Ethan Burg led Newtown with a time of 4:54.

400: Matt Mossbarger ran a 53.0 to qualify for the SWC and LL championships, and Cole Terry ran a 54.9 to qualify for the SWC championships.

200: Gus Porto finished with a time of 24.5, which is two-tenths of a second from qualifying for the SWC championships.

3200: 1. Christopher Gamble ran a 10:42.0 in the 3200, which qualifies him for the SWC championships.

Javelin: 1. Ryan Erico 129-5

Shot Put: Peter Manfredonia and Eli Kloczyk both qualified for the SWC championships with throws of 41-5 and 40-3, respectively.

“Warm weather makes a huge difference. We had some outstanding performances from Matt Mossbarger, Will Roman, Cole Terry, Eli Kloczyk, Peter Manfredonia, and Christopher Gamble. I was really proud of what we did today,” Newtown Coach Tom Brant said. “Kevin Gorman is getting better each week with his jumping and our distance team is working so incredibly hard to hit their times. I’m really excited to see what we can do next week at our final home meet and Senior Night.”
