The Newtown High School girls’ and boys’ track teams traveled to the 40th O’Grady Relays in Danbury this past weekend. The girls’ team set three school records, and both teams placed highly among competitive schools from across the state.

The O’Grady Relays offers many unique events that are not held at regular dual meets, which gave the Nighthawks an opportunity to compete in some different events. Specifically, the girls showcased their depth and talent with the Shuttle Hurdle Relay. Very few track meets offer relays for hurdlers.

Another event that is not commonly run in high school in Connecticut that the athletes competed in this past weekend was the 2000 meter steeplechase. In this event, athletes complete five laps around the track hurdling over barriers, and once a lap the athletes hurdle over a water pit. Aidan Budge and Soheib Dissa ran this event.

The girls’ Sprint Medley Relay 100-100-200-400 of Ella Hall, Skyler Howard, Amelia Daly, and Elise Barricelli set a school record and a South-West Conference record, coming in first place with a time of 1:53.15.

The girls’ 4x100 meter Shuttle Hurdle Relay team of Jaime Adams, Reese Smith, Kayleigh Troy, Aashni Shetty set a school record and came in fourth with a time of 1:14.57.

Newtown’s 4x1600 meter relay team of Clara D’Amico, Hannah Snayd, Emily Litke, and Riley Powers set a school record and came in second overall with a time of 22:08.7.

The boys’ Distance Medley Relay of Soheib Dissa, Cameron Whorf, Aidan Budge, and Connor Dullinger came in ninth overall with a time of 11:17.08.

The Sprint Medley Relay of Victor Souza, Caleb Smith, John Moxham, and Whorf came in tenth overall with a time of 3:48.60.

Newtown’s boys’ team continued its momentum by defeating Pomperaug of Southbury 86-63, Immaculate of Danbury 103-41, and Stratford 110-32 at Pomperaug High on May 3. Top finishers for Newtown are as follows:
