Will Property Values Suffer?

To the Editor:

Wharton is dangling a shiny object with the promise of “great” tax advantages to their proposal and some P&Z board members seem to be attracted to it. But has anyone stopped to consider that lower property values will yield lower property taxes collected from the good people of Newtown?

I’ve already heard about a deal that fell apart when the prospective buyers, considering a purchase close to the proposed site, withdrew their offer upon learning of the Wharton proposal. Read the handwriting on the wall!

When my husband and I were looking for a home in the Danbury area, our real estate agent asked if we were interested in Newtown, quickly adding that many of her prospective buyers were avoiding Newtown because of the searing memory of the Sandy Hook tragedy.

I believe the Wharton proposal for a freight terminal /mega warehouse/distribution center would cause daily misery, resulting in damage to property values by measurable horrendous traffic congestion, pollution, and wreckage to the environment, all repugnant, ongoing and lasting.
