Chintz-N-Prints Event To Celebrate ‘American Destiny’ And Remember Beloved Newtown Quilter Lilly Orlowski
Lilly Orlowski spent more than fifty years stitching herself into the heart of Newtown through quilting, friendship, faith, family, and community service.
On Saturday, May 23, from noon to 1 pm, friends, neighbors, quilters, and readers are all invited to celebrate her extraordinary life during a special American Destiny book signing at Chintz-N-Prints.
The event will feature co-authors Marcella Luiso Flanagan, now 91, and Phyllis Clare Orlowski, Lilly’s daughter, who together share the unforgettable true story behind American Destiny: A True Story of Family, Roots, and the Journey Between Two Worlds.
Part historical memoir, part family saga, and part narrative cookbook featuring authentic recipes from Apulia, Italy, American Destiny brings to life an emotional Italian-American journey filled with resilience, sacrifice, heritage, hope, and love.
Lilly lived in Newtown with her husband Gene and their four daughters from 1968 until 2019. A devoted member of St Rose Church, she became beloved throughout the community for her warmth, creativity, and generous spirit. From 1983 to 2018, she taught weekly quilting classes at Southbury Senior Center, where generations of students learned not only sewing techniques, but also confidence, friendship, and encouragement.
Her love of fabric and artistry also made her a cherished presence at Chintz-N-Prints, where she worked for 33 years until retiring at age 87. Customers remember Lilly as someone who instantly made people feel welcome while helping them turn fabric into creativity and beauty.
But behind Lilly’s joyful spirit was a remarkable family story stretching across two continents.
In 1948, Lilly was 17 years old and her younger sister Marcie just 13½ when their family left Westchester County, New York, and returned to Bari and the nearby towns of Acquaviva delle Fonti and Cassano delle Murge in southern Italy, hoping to rebuild their lives after World War II. Instead, they encountered a country still struggling with hardship and recovery.
What was meant to be a permanent homecoming became a life-changing five-month journey that shaped both sisters forever.
One unforgettable moment came when Marcie’s luggage was stolen while traveling from Naples to Bari, leaving her with only the dress she was wearing. That experience sparked a lifelong understanding of identity, resilience, and self-expression that later inspired Marcie’s successful career as a fashion designer, manufacturer, and pioneering woman in business during the 1970s.
The family eventually returned to America transformed, carrying with them a deeper understanding of belonging, tradition, sacrifice, and opportunity.
Now, through American Destiny, Lilly and Marcie’s remarkable story comes alive for a new generation.
The May 23 event promises to be far more than a traditional book signing. Guests will have the opportunity to meet Marcella and Phyllis, hear the incredible true story behind the book, celebrate Lilly’s enduring legacy in Newtown, and experience a vivid portrait of the Italian-American journey through history, family stories, food, and culture.
