The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) announced May 8 the 2020 High School Academic All-Americans for the 2019-2020 school year. This marks the 27th year in which the NHSCA has honored those who triumph in and out of the classroom.

Congratulations to Newtown High School athletes Steven Leuci, Luca Manfredi, Fritz Maurath and Steven Vournazos for being awarded this honor. Nominated by Coach Mike Long, all four are NHS wrestlers, carried a 3.9 GPA, and placed in the Connecticut state tournament this season.

The CEO of NHSCA, Bobby Ferraro stated “These student-athletes are leaders in and out of the classroom and are the future leaders of tomorrow. We are proud to deem them Academic All Americans.”

NHS Wrestling is proud of the student athletes as they excel on the mat and in the classroom.

Only 90 Academic All-Americans from 25 states were awarded this year across the US, with four from Newtown and all from one sport.

Luca was one of only eight freshman; Leuci was one of only 19 juniors; Fritz and Vournazos were two of only 50 seniors.

Connecticut led the country with 18 total awards.
