One heck of a roll, all right.

What else can be said about a team – and here we are talking about the Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team - that has boosted its record to 9-6 overall and 8-2 in the South-West Conference after hammering both New Fairfield and Brookfield?

The scores were: Newtown 14, New Fairfield 2; Newtown 13, Joel Barlow 6.

That’s some kind of offense and maybe it was just as fine-tuned when it battled Ridgefield on Thursday (after press time) to close out the 2001 regular season.

Those last two wins identified the ‘Hawks – in no uncertain teams – as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming SWC playoffs. Although it was unclear which schools are the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds (New Milford is the No. 1 seed), the ‘Hawks will be hosting a semi-final on Tuesday and quite possibly against Brookfield or Masuk.

Newtown is 4-0 against those two teams this year.

Last Friday, Ellie Champagne and Jen Chuddy scored four goals apiece to lead a strong offensive effort. Erin McDonald chipped in with two goals while Megan Anderson, Angela Shannon, Katie Davis and Mary Bell all scored one goal. Morgan Pacheco earned a pair of assists while Shannon, Meg Johnston, David and Bell were all credited with an assist.

On Monday, McDonald came up with a great six-goal performance that gave her 44 goals for the season. Champagne added three goals of her own and now she has 40 goals for the season. Anderson, Kelly Shpunt, Chuddy and Meg Johnston all scored goals. Shpunt and Pacheco chipped in with two assists apiece while Champagne, Anderson and Shannon came up with one assist apiece.

The ‘Hawks headed into that match with Ridgefield on Thursday having already lost once to the Lady Tigers, who are led by former Newtown High School coach, Joanne Johnson.
