Fun & Games With Flowers At The Library

By Shannon Hicks

The Garden Club of Newtown presented a three-day flower show at C.H. Booth Library in Newtown last weekend. “Toys & Games” opened on Friday, May 18, with a round of critiques offered by certified master judge Barbara O’Connor. Mrs O’Connor, who offered critiques for the club one year ago, had been invited back by the garden club because of her fairness and thoroughness.

“She’s a good judge. She picks up every little thing,” club member Joan Bergquist was overheard saying at one point.

Mrs O’Connor offered positive and negative remarks for each of the arrangements, backing up every one of her points with compliments and suggestions. Following the critique session, the arrangements were left on view for  the remainder of the weekend.

Garden club members created arrangements in three categories for the show. There were small-scale creations, arrangements based on childhood memories, and designs that worked in a toy with wheels.
