Three-Peat — Hoyt Leads More Than 300 To Finish For Third Straight Rooster Run Win

Kevin Hoyt, for the third year in a row, was the first to cross the finish line at the annual Rooster Run, held May 21. The 20-year-old Newtown resident finished the 5K course in 15:52. The morning race began and ended at the Newtown Municipal Center in Fairfield Hills. More than 300 runners and walkers of a variety of ages — mostly from town, one from as far away as Iowa — participated in the 3.1-mile event, held for the 37th year.

Newtown’s Chi Ryder was the top female finisher, completing the course in 21:32. Claudia Mele and Cathy Kost, of Newtown and Sandy Hook, respectively, finished two-three among women, crossing the line in 21:51 and 22:12.

The second-place overall finisher was Timothy Milenkevich, of Ansonia, who came across in 16:20. Newtown’s David Klein was third in a time of 17:47, Woodbury’s Louis Garguilo came in fourth in 18:07, and Newtown’s Garrett Henchcliffe was fifth in 18:30.

Race organizer Mark Gerace was enthusiastic about the level of participation and noted that the weather cleared up in time for the event. He encouraged runners through a public address system as they approached the finish line and announced and handed out trophies to the top overall and category finishers.

“After a week of rain we had a great day for the 37th Annual Newtown Rooster Run 5K. All of the proceeds benefit Newtown Scholarship Association, so it’s a great Newtown event — the unofficial start to Newtown’s summer. And we look forward to the support in future years,” Gerace said.
