"Fire On Main Street: Residents Safe As Early Morning Fire Destroys Vehicle, Outbuildings," by Shannon Hicks, published May 24. A fire that started in a parked van destroyed the vehicle, an adjacent shed and barn, and part of a centuries-old home on Main Street, but did not injure the homeowners nor any first responders to the call. "Newtown Officials, Police, Schools Gird For Fallout After Latest Deadly School Shooting," by John Voket, published May 24. Only a few days after helping to hang the lazy wafting summer flag atop Newtown's historic Main Street flagpole, Hook & Ladder firefighters were again summoned to bring that symbol of national pride to half-mast Tuesday evening. The gesture of mourning, came in the wake of heartbreaking news out of Texas. Newtown High School’s Charlie Curtis darted home with the South-West Conference Championship-clinching run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Newtown High School’s baseball team stole one from Masuk of Monroe, 3-2, at neutral site Bethel High on May 25.
