Volunteers Needed To Save The Lake

BRIDGEWATER — Friends of the Lake will sponsor the 3rd Annual Save The Lake Day on Saturday, June 10, from 9 am to 1 pm.

Save the Lake Day is a great opportunity for friends and neighbors from the six towns surrounding Lake Lillinonah — Bridgewater, Brookfield, New Milford, Newtown, Roxbury, and Southbury — to pull together and clean its shores and waters. More than 150 volunteers turned up for last year’s event, and organizers are expecting even more this year.

During the 2005 event a 30-yard dumpster was overflowing with everyday items at the end of the four-hour work period, including a safe that had been broken into, a car engine, four refrigerators, and 90 tires.

Volunteers will meet at the state boat launch off Route 133 in Bridgewater; teams of volunteers are given assignments and sent out from there. Everyone gathers back at the boat launch at the end of the day. Food and prizes are donated by local businesses.

“The efforts of these dedicated volunteers have made a positive impact on the lake and the surrounding areas,” said Alexis Hawley, co-chair of the 3rd Annual Save the Lake Day. “This is a very positive volunteer event in our area.”

Volunteers are still being sought for the June 10 collection. For additional information visit FriendsOfTheLake.org or call 860-210-8064.
