Occupation: I worked in the Newtown High School as a maintenance man for 42 years. I remember my first day of work there. I was told to go to the auditorium, and I found out a pipe had busted. There was ice all over the floor. It had happened over the weekend, so no one had checked on it. They made me clean it up. They would also have food fights in the cafeteria. Once, food went in the principal's face. There was even food hanging from the ceiling! But they got the guy who did it. They had good food there. My wife worked in the school cafeteria there. She hid behind the wall during the food fights. The high school dedicated a yearbook to me in the 90s, and also dedicated a yearbook to both my wife and me, in 2002.

Family: My son Chuck, he's a good guy. My other son, Neal, is a carpenter. Last October, I had my 60th wedding anniversary to my wife Mildred. I have seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Pets: I used to have a beagle named Betsy.

How long have you lived in Newtown? We have lived in Newtown since my son Neal was 2, so since 1965. A lot of the houses that are in the neighborhood now were not around when we moved here. It used to be a dead-end road.

What do you like to do in your free time? I used to go fishing and hunting all the time. I used to hunt rattlesnakes up in Kent where the Indian reservation is. We are part of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation. I would donate the rattlesnakes to the Peabody Museum and Beardsley Park for anti-venom.

Do you have a favorite type of music? Cowboy music! Country western music. I liked it my whole life. I used to go square dancing when I was younger. Now I'm too old for that.

Do you have a favorite travel destination? Rhode Island. I used to go on vacation in the summertime. I would go swimming and fishing.

What is the best thing about Newtown? The sport games. It's a nice quiet town, too.

Who has been the greatest influence in your life? My wife and Chuck. They've made me a better person.

If you could spend a day with anyone, who would you choose? Hard to say; probably my older brother Earl "Bub." He died two years ago and is buried up in Kent. We were close. We served on the same ship together in the Navy, right after the time the Sullivan Brothers died.

When did you serve in the military? I enlisted in the Navy on December 29, 1950, and on October 20, 1954, I got discharged. I served during Korea on two Destroyers: DD-734 USS Purdy and DD-708 USS Dickson. My older brother had enlisted in the Navy during the end of World War II and served till Vietnam.

Charles Kilson is this week's Snapshot profile.

What were some memories from your time in the service? I saw Cuba before it was a Communist state, before Castro. I went all over Europe, too. Another memory I remember was that originally I was going to join the Marines, but when I went down to New York the guy said, "You have some heart trouble. Don't join the Marines," so the Navy took me. And I enjoyed boot camp in Maryland. You learn a lot. My brother would come over, he was in submarines, and he would come see me sometimes. I had to go to the Newport Hospital for a lung operation there.
