Hospital’s Freshstart, Cancer Center Tour In The Spotlight

NEW MILFORD — On Tuesday, June 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm the New Milford Hospital Regional Heart Center begins an American Cancer Society Freshstart quit smoking program. There are four classes, held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for a two-week period.

Freshstart is the American Cancer Society’s quit smoking program, and all of the methods and activities contain the most effective elements for success. Freshstart can be a start to a new life without cigarettes. This program is designed to help individuals stop smoking, and emphasizes that smoking cessation is a two-part process: 1) stopping and 2) staying stopped.

The cost for the program is $25 per participant, with a $5 refund for each class attended.  Registration is open to the public.

Then, on Wednesday, June 10, from 7 to 8:30 pm, oncologists Debra Brandt, DO, and Anne Chiang, MD, PhD, will provide a lecture titled “Research & Clinical Trials — The Answer to the Fight Against Cancer.” Prior to the lecture from 6 to 7, the cancer center staff is hosting a reception and tour of the Regional Cancer Center.

The events are free and open to the public.

Clinical trials in this community setting bring some of the latest treatment options to cancer patients and continue to help fight this disease. Drs Brandt and Chiang will discuss the recent grant awarded from the Connecticut Clinical Oncology Trials Network and how it provides convenient access to some of the most advanced treatment available.

Clinical trials can be for patients who are newly diagnosed or who have advanced disease. Along with the research component, the oncologists will also explain the importance of screening and education in the fight against cancer.

Preregistration is requested for either activity by calling (toll free) 800-350-1595 or on the hospital website at www.newmilfordhospital.org (go to Events section).
