Newtown High School’s baseball, softball, and lacrosse teams were all eliminated from state tournament play this week, concluding their overall successful campaigns. The softball and baseball teams, after first-round wins, were both defeated on the road in the second round on June 3. The boys’ lacrosse team exited in the first round of their bracket on June 4, and the girls’ lacrosse team was eliminated the next day.

Three of the four teams were defeated by defending state champions: The softball team against Southington, and the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams against Fairfield Prep and Darien, respectively.

On the Diamonds

In the Class LL bracket, the 17th-seeded NHS softball team, after blanking No. 16 Trumbull 4-0 to kick off tournament action on June 2, lost 13-0 to top-ranked Southington the next afternoon.

The baseball team, the No. 21 team in the LL draw, was involved in a pair of 3-2 ballgames which featured comebacks. Newtown, after overcoming a 2-0 deficit to defeat No. 12 Greenwich on June 2, fell 3-2 in eight innings to fifth-seeded Naugatuck the next day. Newtown trailed 1-0 before tying the game in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. The Nighthawks took a 2-1 lead before Naugatuck rallied in the bottom half of the frame to advance.

The NHS laxmen earned the No. 7 seed and a first-round Class LL home game against No. 10 Fairfield Prep, but the Jesuits pulled away early and coasted to an 8-1 win at Blue & Gold Stadium on June 4.

Newtown’s girls’ lacrosse squad, seeded sixth in its LL bracket, opened state action with a 17-6 triumph over No. 11 Amity of Woodbridge on June 3. Two days later, third-seeded Darien defeated Newtown 20-5.
