Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ track and field teams had some impressive performances, including a state class champion relay effort and some school record-setting times, in the Class L State Championships on June 1 and in the State Open on June 6; both took place at Willowbrook Park in New Britain.

In the Class L meet, Newtown’s 4x100 relay team of Ella Hall, Skyler Howard, Amelia Daly, and Elise Barricelli won the championship with a time of 50.65.

The 4x400 relay of Riley Powers, Daly, Howard, and Hannah Snayd took second in 4:03.97. The 4x800 relay of Ally McCarthy, Ryann Heim-Sherwood, Emily Litke, and Snayd placed fourth in 9:52.54.

Snayd was sixth in the 800 in 2:21.38.

Howard placed fourth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.65.

Kayleigh Troy came in sixth in the 300 hurdles in 49.07, and was tenth in the triple jump competition with a 32-10.

Jaime Adams placed seventh in the high jump, clearing the bar at 10 feet, and was seventh in the triple jump with a 33-05.50.

In the shot-put event, Shayna Millard came in sixth with a throw of 29-03.25.

On the boys’ side, Kevin Murray was fifth in the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.57 and sixth in the 300 hurdles in 42.80.

The 4x800 of Soheib Dissa, Connor Dullinger, Cameron Whorf, and Aidan Budge was fifth in 8:15.52.

The 4x400 of Budge, John Moxham, Hayden Bobowick, and Whorf was sixth in 3:32.25.

Budge came in sixth in the 800 in a time of 2:00.08.

Whorf was eighth in the 400 in a time of 52.12.

Murray came in seventh in the shot-put competition with a throw of 42-09.50.

Caleb Smith was eighth in the javelin throw with a 147-10.

At the State Open, Howard was 20th in the 200 meter dash in 26.70. All three girls’ team relays recorded season-best times. The 4x100 relay came in 12th in 50.16, the 4x400 team came in third in 4:00.94, and Newtown’s 4x800 relay was tenth in a school record-setting time of 9:48.16. On the boys’ side, Murray placed 20th in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.34. The 4x800 relay was 14th in 8:20.72.

“The season has been great. The guys worked really hard,” said Becky Osborne, head coach of the boys’ squad.

The season continues for some of the girls and boys in the multi-event state championships at Willowbrook Park in mid June. Smith will compete in the decathlon and Dissa in the steeplechase event. Powers and Troy will compete in the heptathlon and Litke and D’Amico in the steeplechase.

On the girls’ side, 44 of the 70 team members were freshmen and sophomores. “But we had a ton of experiences and talented leaders to help guide them,” said Becky Bourret, head coach of the girls.

The 4x400 relay will compete in the New England Championships.

“The 4x4 who broke records last year was still available to run this season but it was a coaches choice to utilize different athletes and it paid off. This group of four has gelled and done amazing things,” Bourret said.

Newtown’s girls won a pair of invitationals, the Torrington Alumni event and O’Grady Relays this spring.

“Overall, the success was awesome but the team bond and connection this season was beyond what I could hope for. I really enjoyed this team and am sad to see the season end,” Bourret said.
