Randy Carboni will lead “Art is Fun,” a workshop hosted by The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown that will invite participants to explore Carboni’s unique approach to art.

A Connecticut native currently living in Bethel, Carboni is very active in the local arts community. He has been a member of Ridgefield Guild of Artists since 1995 and has served on the Guild’s Board of Directors, created and maintained the Guild’s original website, and has been the Guild’s historian.

He has also been a board member of Ridgefield Arts Council and the abstract/contemporary moderator for the website Wetcanvas. He is a member of SCAN and Lyme Art Association.

In his artist’s statement, Carboni says his art is full of energy and feeling, that he relies on instinct and emotion rather than on accuracy to color and subject matter, and that over time he has developed a unique style of painting that is both interesting to himself and to the viewer.

“My subject matter varies as I look for composition and colors that appeal to me rather than the content,” the statement continues. “When painting watercolors I use a variety of items and a brush to apply the ink and paint to make each piece a unique experience with a consistent style.

“By ten years old my dream was to be a MAD magazine artist. While attending the School of Visual Arts as an illustration major, an instructor told me I was a natural at fine arts, forever changing my artistic direction. Now primarily focused on watercolors and oil paintings you can still see traces of my MAD magazine influence.”

Carboni’s artwork has won multiple awards and has been in many solo and group exhibits.

“Art is Fun” will open with students focusing on drawing and composition.

“Then the fun begins,” Carboni promises. “Using a mix of medium, ink, watercolor, pastel, charcoal, and/or acrylics, we will boldly create expressive and fun pieces of art.”

The workshop is planned for Saturday, July 11, 10:15 am-3:30 pm, at Art & Frame, 77 Main Street in Newtown. There will be time for a short lunch break.

Cost is $100 ($75 for SCAN members) and registration is required; visit scanart.org/education.

Those planning to attend will need to provide their own watercolor or multi media paper, the bigger the better; waterproof India ink with an eye dropper cap (Carboni prefers the brand Higgens), and any other media they like to use except oils.

There will be extra supplies to try at the workshop. Images to work from will be supplied; students are also welcome to provide their own.

Wearing a smock or old clothes is strongly encouraged.

“This workshop can get messy and most of all, fun,” said Carboni.
