American Legion Post 202 of Newtown supports local programs such as the Constitutional Quill essay contest in the schools, Student Athlete of the Year at Newtown High School, the Veterans Day ceremony at the high school, the Local Law Enforcement Officer of the Year distinction, and Community Americanism awards.

Like those of many others, the local post’s schedule and events have been curtailed due to COVID-19. Meetings are usually held the first Wednesday of each month at the Newtown Senior Center, but the center has been closed since mid-March.

Although its season traditionally runs from July to June, there is no July 2020 meeting scheduled this year. The post is planning to resume regular meetings on Wednesday, August 5. It will continue to meet at 8 Simpson Street, but it is moving to the community center side of the municipal building.

Meetings will begin at 7 pm.

The post is always seeking new members. Members of the US Armed Forces who are currently serving on active duty and those who have served as least one day of active military duty since December 7, 1941 and have been honorably discharged are eligible to join.

Reservists and national guardsmen who did not deploy or serve active duty but who attended basic training or advanced school on Title 10 orders also qualify.

Annual dues are $35.

For more information, stop by any meeting, find Post 202 on Facebook (facebook.com/americanlegionnewtown), or e-mail americanlegionnewtown@gmail.com.

For a membership application, contact Donna Monteleone, 203-577-9568 or Post 202 Commander Nick Cabral, 203-994-8993.

Like those of many others, the schedule for American Legion Post 202 of Newtown has been curtailed due to COVID-19. There is good news, however, for its members and those interested in joining the group.
