Summer Reading Kickoff

C.H. Booth Library kicked off the children’s summer reading program on June 27 with an open house from 10 to 3. The Young Adult Council sponsored a variety of activities for the children.

The YA Council wrote and acted in a play they called Curious George’s Birthday Surprise. They included characters from popular children’s books including Curious George, Spot, Strawberry Shortcake, and Geronimo Stilton from a British books series.

Throughout the day, children registered for the program, which ends August 19. Each child received a log to record the books they read. Prizes are awarded at several levels.

Reading five books earns the child a poster and a coupon for a slice of pizza. Ten books earns a donut. Fifteen books equal Rock Cat tickets. And, upon reading 20 books, the child’s picture goes on the “Wall of Fame” and the reader can choose a book from a variety offered.

The open house culminated with a musical presentation, Songs From Across America, with musician Geoff Kaufman.
