Successful Day Of Caring

On Wednesday, June 9, more than 550 volunteers from 25 local businesses and corporations showed their “community stuff” by taking part United Way of Western Connecticut’s Annual Days of Caring. More than 100 projects took place to benefit human services agencies within the 14-town area of Northern Fairfield and Southern Litchfield Counties.

“Every year without fail, our local businesses come together for the common good,” said Michael Johnston, CEO of the United Way of Western Connecticut. “Our community is well known for responding in a big way, and once again we have seen this as over 40 social service organizations benefited from the actions of over 550 energized volunteers.”

Area companies signed up for projects such as landscaping, painting, cleaning, collecting food, and event planning. In addition to the volunteer efforts, local businesses donated thousands of dollars worth of materials and supplies toward Day of Caring Projects.

This year marked the 16th anniversary of the Day of Caring. A committee of dedicated volunteers from local companies worked throughout the year to ensure a successful Day of Caring campaign. The hands-on projects that volunteers have completed for local nonprofit agencies have saved these organizations thousands of dollars, enabling valuable and limited resources to be used for direct services to the organizations’ clients, rather than necessary but costly maintenance projects.

Employees from Union Savings Bank organized, inventoried, and cleaned the kitchenette and attic of Newtown Youth & Family Services, while employees of Newtown Savings Bank worked at the William Knight Foundation of Danbury.
