Geraldine (Oberg) Cornell

Geraldine “Gerri” (Oberg) Cornell, 73, died peacefully with family by her side on June 30, at the Hospice House of Williamsburg, Va.

Among her survivors is a daughter and son-in law, Tracy and Brian Kean, and granddaughters Katelyn and Haley Kean, all of Newtown.

She is also survived by another daughter, Rebecca Slattery, and her husband William of Gloucester, Va., and their and a son, David Cornell, and his wife JoAnne, of Bethel; three additional grandchildren, Ryan Blais, Matthew DoVale, and Cortney DoVale; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Jeanne Granniss; a brother, Richard Oberg; a host of nieces and nephews, and her canine companions, Cricket and KC.

Gerri was a Newtown native, attended Newtown schools, and eventually moved into a home on Tanglewood Lane that she and her husband built. She later retired following a long career at Pitney Bowes, and moved with her husband to Virginia.

She was a member of Newtown United Methodist Church, and was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star. Gerri was a loving mother to her family, enjoyed cooking and entertaining, was an avid gardener, and had a love for all things outdoors. She also was a very creative artist who loved to draw cartoons and paint.

Mrs Cornell was predeceased by her husband, Kent Brian Cornell, and her parents, Rebecca and Carl Oberg, and a brother, Charles Strobel.

Funeral services, to be officiated by the Reverend Mel Kawakami, will be held at 11 am Friday, July 11, at Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook, with interment to follow in Zoar Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 10, from 4 until 7 pm, at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Williamsburg Hospice House, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg VA 23188.

Arrangements have been handled by Hogg Funeral Home and Crematory, Gloucester Point, Va.
