The 2000 Bertram Stroock Memorial Tennis Tournament, sponsored by the Newtown Tennis Association, is up and running for the 26th year according to tournament director Martin West. Semi-final and final round matches will be scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, August 26 and 27, at Dickinson Park.

The tournament is for Newtown residents only.

Mailings are out this week to all NTA members. There are seven events from which to choose – women’s singles, women’s B singles, women’s doubles, men’s singles, men’s B singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles (the B division is limited to beginning and low intermediate players only).

Cost is $10 for one event, $15 for two, and $20 for three. Entries must be mailed with accompanying check and vital identification by July 20 to NTA, P.O. Box 3432, Newtown, 06470.

Draw sheets and tournament guidelines will be sent to each person entering the tournament. Depending on the size of the draw, expect a first-round deadline to be set in early August. Players will be expected to arrange their own matches by the deadlines listed on the draw sheets and to report scores to the coordinator listed. All matches are two-out-of-three sets.

The tournament will be single elimination, with consolations.

Completed entries must include name, address, city, state, zip, and phone number to be included on the draw sheet for all players and partners. Players should real all the guidelines that accompany the draw sheet.

Balls will be provided for the semi-finals and finals. However, for early round matches it is customary for both individuals or teams to bring balls. The winner takes the unopened can and the loser gets the used balls.

NTA scorekeepers will be provided for all final matches and trophies will be awarded.
