State Officials Flag Recall

Of Fresh Tuna Steaks

Anyone who recently purchased tuna steaks at the Newtown Big Y store in preparation for holiday grilling this weekend, be warned. The Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr, is alerting consumers about a voluntary recall of fresh tuna steaks sold at Shaw’s, Star Market, and Big Y grocery stores in New England, due to possible elevated levels of histamine.

North Coast Seafood of South Boston, Mass., is recalling its fresh tuna steaks and advising consumers to avoid eating the fish, because high levels of histamine can cause symptoms such as tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, rash on the face and upper body, hives and itching of skin, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea in some people. There have been three reported incidents by consumers.

“Customers who purchased fresh tuna steaks from Shaw’s, Star Market, or Big Y stores in the past few weeks and still have them in their freezer would be wise to bring them back to the store for a full refund or replacement,” Commissioner Farrell said. “The affected product was in retail stores throughout New England from June 20 through June 24.”

At this time, no other fish or seafood sold by North Coast Seafood is included with this voluntary recall.

Customers who have questions or concerns about this issue may contact Northcoast Seafood at 617-345-4410, extension 260.
