Ronald Charles Ando, 75, died July 6, at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. A longtime resident of Sandy Hook, he was born in Bridgeport, July 20, 1938, to Charles and Irene Nemeth Ando.

Besides his wife Carole, his son Richard and granddaughter Lassen of Cambridge, Mass., survive Mr Ando.

Mr Ando was a graduate of Fairfield Preparatory School and Fairfield University.

He enlisted in the Flight Program, earning his wings as a US Navy pilot. After proudly serving his country, he earned his master’s degree from the University of New Haven.

Mr Ando had many interests. He had a passion and great skill for skiing, sailing, and tennis. He loved being in the outdoors, testing his abilities, and encouraging others to do the same. He was an extreme skier before that sport became popular, and was a PSIA-certified ski instructor. Later, he earned his United States Coast Guard captain’s license and sailed Long Island Sound for years from Stratford’s Housatonic Boat Club.

He endured his long illness with courage and patience.  He never lost hope.

A memorial service will take place at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Newtown Forest Association, PO Box 213, Newtown CT 06470.  May all enjoy the many beautiful Forest Association signs throughout town that Mr Ando handcrafted during his years running Ando Sign Crafters.

Honan Funeral Home, Newtown, is serving the family.
