The second annual Summer Jam Concert Series, a weekly offering of free concerts for children and families that opened on June 24, “has been phenomenal” so far, according to volunteer coordinator Erin Masotta.

“The turnout this year has far exceeded last year’s and we hope to keep the attendance high for the next several weeks,” she said Monday, July 14.

Concerts are hosted by Newtown Parks & Recreation, and sponsored by Claris Construction. They are presented in the band shell at Dickinson Park on Elm Drive, beginning at 12:30 pm Tuesdays.

This week, however, due to the projected weather for July 15, the decision has already been made to move tomorrow’s concert to the gym at Hawley Elementary School, 29 Church Hill Road.

Guest performer is Amy Rogell, who performs children’s concerts throughout the tri-state area and teaches workshops on creative movement and innovative music.

The schedule for this year’s series continues with Bari Koral Family Rock Band on July 22; Alastair Moock, July 29; and Zak Morgan, August 5.

Performances are expected to return to Dickinson Park next week. Announcements will be made, if needed, for shows that need to be moved elsewhere.

Shows are suitable for all ages.

For the indoor show at Hawley School, Parks & Rec is asking that only water be brought into the gymnasium, as well as blankets — but not chairs — for seating. (For outdoor concerts, parents are welcome to bring low chairs or blankets for seating, as well as picnic lunches.)
