Collision At Driveway

Newtown Police report Juan Castaneda, 51, of Breinigsville, Penn, operating a 2025 Cadillac Escalade, was stopped in the southbound lane of Hawleyville Road at the entrance of a driveway at 10:42 am July 6. Gerard Alix, 79, of Brookfield, operating a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe, was traveling northbound on Hawleyville Road. Castaneda turned left to enter the driveway and was struck by Alix's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Castaneda was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way while making a left hand turn.

Flipped Car

Newtown Police report Cristiano Fraga Oliveira, 44, of Bethel, operating a 2005 Honda Odyssey, was traveling northbound on Mt Pleasant Road at 7:32 pm July 6. While negotiating a lefthand curve in the road in rainy conditions, the vehicle began to slide off the roadway to the right. It left the roadway, struck a guardrail, and then continued down an embankment. The vehicle flipped upside down and came to a stop on its roof.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Fraga Oliveira was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Collision In Intersection

Newtown Police report Camporverde Hony, of Newark, NJ, operating a 2019 Freightliner tractor trailer, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road at 4:10 pm July 7. Higor Gomes, 29, of Danbury, operating a 2025 Infiniti QX60, was stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of Church Hill Road and The Boulevard. Hony struck Gomes' vehicle.

Gomes was evaluated and transported to Danbury Hospital. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action is mentioned in the report.

Drove Over Island, Hit Sign

Newtown Police report Christopher Jones, 26, of Bristol, operating a 2024 Toyota Tacoma, was making a right turn from South Main Street onto Mile Hill Road at 7:37 pm July 7. While looking at his GPS, Jones made his turn wide and drove onto the island, striking the keep right island sign.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Jones was issued a verbal warning for making an improper turn.

Struck Tree

Newtown Police report Michael Bonasera, 58, of Hawleyville, was traveling westbound on Taunton Hill Road at 9:39 pm July 8. Bonasera left the westbound lane, crossed the eastbound lane, and left the roadway before striking a tree.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Bonasera was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Collision In Parking Lot

Newtown Police report Barbara Ance, 63, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2019 Subaru Forester, was parking in a space in the lot at 6 Queen Street at 11:29 am July 12. A 2025 BMW X1 owned by Paula Martiska, 53, of Newtown, was parked in an adjacent spot. Ance struck Martiska's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Both Drivers Injured

Newtown Police report John Barry, 72, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Nissan Rogue, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 6:54 pm July 12. Bruce Tumyol, 40, of Shelton, was traveling southbound on South Main Street. Bary attempted to turn left into a driveway and was struck by Tumyol's vehicle.

Both operators were evaluated by EMS and Tumyol was transported to Danbury Hospital. Barry declined transport. Both vehicles were towed.

Barry was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at a driveway.
