Douglas T. Main, Sr

Douglas T. Main, Sr, 76, of Basking Ridge, N.J., died peacefully July 16, surrounded by his family. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., August 19, 1937, to Mary and Douglas  Main.

In addition to his wife of 46 years, Carolyn Thoden Main, three devoted sons and their families, Douglas, Jr, and his wife Laura, and grandsons Douglas and Morgan of Newtown, David, and his wife Heather, and grandsons Jackson and Parker of South Burlington, Vt., and Keith of Manchester, Conn., survive Mr Main.

He graduated from Linden High School in 1955. He joined the United States Naval Reserves and worked as an apprentice machinist at Bethlehem Steel in Hoboken, N.J., before becoming an instrument toolmaker at Bell Laboratories, now Alcatel-Lucent, in Murray Hill, N.J. He retired after 41 years of service, in 2001.

Mr Main loved his childhood beach bungalow in Southampton, N.Y., where he enjoyed fishing, boating, and the beach. He and his wife took great pleasure sailing their Tartan 30 on Lake Champlain in Vermont.

Many will remember Mr Main for his incredible sense of humor and the joy he brought to all those with whom he interacted.

Visitation will be take place Monday, July 21, at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Avenue, Basking Ridge, from 2 to 4 pm and  6 to 8 pm. A funeral Mass will take place Tuesday, July 22, at 10 am, at St James Church, 184 South Finley Avnue, Basking Ridge. Interment will be Wednesday, July 23, at 1 pm, at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Southampton, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be sent to a charity of choice.
