The Newtown Hawks 12U baseball team defeated Brookfield 10-8 in New Canaan on July 11 to secure their incredible fourth consecutive Connecticut Cal Ripken State Championship.

The Hawks were powered by a three-run home run by Chris Fairbairn in the bottom of the first inning to put Newtown ahead 5-2, and by a towering solo shot by Luke Trefny in the fourth inning that broke a 6-6 tie. Owen Leighton started on the mound and was relieved by Trefny and Colin Scholz.

This year’s state tournament team comprised Jackson Christos, Jacob Christos, J.J. Deeb, Chris Evans, Chris Fairbairn, Quinn Garvin, Nolan Garvin, Braxton Kuzma, Owen Leighton, Hudson Levy, Austin Luczak, Hudson Matta, Colin Scholz, Luke Trefny, and Ben Tyler. The team is coached by Chris Evans, T.J. Garvin, Jordan Levy, and Kevin Kuzma. The team now prepares for the Cal Ripken World Series in Branson, Missouri, August 6-16.
