Catching Up With Technology At NewtownBee.com

Technology keeps changing, and sometimes it feels like chasing a greased piglet around the barnyard, change happens so quickly; but online readers have no doubt noticed this week that we have taken that slippery technology in hand with the implementation of an updated newtownbee.com website.

The ease with which readers can access information at newtownbee.com was foremost in our minds as we addressed changes to the site. We empathize with the frustrations we have heard on the difficulties of navigating our previous website. To the extent that is reasonable, we have worked to eliminate those frustrations and simplify the search process and story access.

Larger font options for each story make the online articles more comfortable for all vision levels, and photographs that accompany the stories can be enlarged with a click — an option not previously available. Our photographs are selected to better tell a story, and we believe that improved visuals will enhance the experience. The photos taken by our staff appear in the photo gallery, found under the house icon on our home page, along with information on ordering copies of the photos.

Submission forms for engagement, wedding, and birth announcements can be found under the house icon, and the completed forms can now be sent directly via e-mail. Forms can also be printed out, as in the past, and mailed or faxed to the office, of course.

Articles dating back to 1999 can be found under the house icon heading by selecting Articles Archive.

It is easier, too, to print out a clean copy (with the featured photo) of articles, to share articles to your Facebook page, to Tweet to your friends, or to e-mail an article.

Education is an area we cover in town that we know is widely appreciated. That category is now its own heading, making the hunt formerly ensued under “Features” a thing of the past.

Under the Living tab, drop downs for business, health, religion, restaurants, and cultural events will be found.

Keeping readers as up-to-date as possible is always a priority. Information on local events is found by selecting a date from the calendar, which in our newest website iteration is located on the right hand side of each page — or select the Calendar heading at the top of the home page.

You might find a poll popping up on our home page now and then — we would love it if you take part.

Keep an eye on our home page, as well, where we will soon allow readers to sign up for free e-mail notifications of breaking news. As we add to our new website in coming weeks, you will also find crosswords and other games under our Living tab.

One thing that has not changed, on our website or in print, is our dedication to bringing the news of Newtown to our readers in a fair and honest manner. As always, we are privileged to do so.

It has been a process to update the website in a manner that benefits our readers. We think we’ve caught technology by the tail for now, but we invite you to give a squeal at editor@thebee.com if you encounter problems — we don’t want an opportunity for improvement to escape our grasp.
