LAKE PLACID, New York – It would seem to be a daunting task for an ordinary person (that is, swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and then running 26.2 miles) but Joe Whelan, Chris McDonnell and Peter Perkins are not ordinary.

Those three Newtown residents attacked the Ironman USA Triathlon in Lake Placid, New York, last weekend.

Whelan, in the Male 35-39 division, finished the brutal course in 10:43.46 – which was 121st overall and 25th out of 233 competitors in his division. Perkins, in the Male 50-54 division, finished in 12:33.59 – which was 689th overall and 20th out of 88 in the division. And McDonnell, in the Male 40-44 division, finished in 13:23.26 – which was 1,010th overall and 168th out of 277 in the division.

Kirill Litovtsenko of Maardu, Estonia finished first in 8:46.15. There were 1,673 competitors who finished the course.
