Summer Workshop Cabaret Performance

On August 8 at 7 pm at Newtown High School, the students of the Summer Musical Theatre Workshop will perform their first cabaret.

As a group, the students have developed the concept of the show: trapped in a museum, the characters must use the clues around them to get home. Students will be performing popular Broadway musical hits such as “I Can Hear the Bells” from Hairspray, “I’ll Know” from Guys and Dolls, “A Change In Me” from Beauty and the Beast, and “The Song of Purple Summer” from Spring Awakening, among many others.

Since July 21, students have been developing their skills through improvisation and movement games, challenging vocal techniques, and investigation of all technical aspects of putting on a production. Along the way, they have made new friends who share their love of theater.

The director of the Workshop, John Harned, who is also the NHS Choral Director and director of the NHS musicals, has been joined by Technical Director and Set Designer Erin Thomas (set designer and Artist-In-Residence at the National Technical Institute for the Dear). Assisting them have been Diana Curcuruto and Alex Vetrano (interns), Alex Hennessey (assistant musical director), and Ryan Calderara (assistant intern).

The performance will be on a transformed version of Newtown High School’s stage. Through an intimate, cabaret-like setting the performers will take the audience on a journey through popular musical theater. Tickets will go on sale Monday, August 4, and are $10 each.

Call Newtown Continuing Education at 426-1787 for reservations, because only a limited number of tickets are available. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
