Classic Musical Will Entertain All Ages

BETHLEHEM — The Act Association of The Gary-The Olivia Theatre will be presenting the musical My Fair Lady over two weekends in August.

One of the most celebrated musicals, My Fair Lady tells the story of a cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, who meets the noted linguist Professor Henry Higgins outside of Covent Garden on a rainy night in 1912. Higgins, after hearing the girl speak, boasts to his companion Colonel Pickering that he can turn the miserable flower girl into a lady, by teaching her proper English.

The next morning, Eliza shows up at Higgins’ door and offers to pay him to teach her how to speak properly.

“It’s almost irresistible,” says Higgins to Pickering, “she’s so deliciously low.” Higgins makes a bet with Pickering that he can pass Eliza off as a Duchess in six months.

Based on the play George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady is a comedy about social class, the power of persistence, and the mystery of love. It features several songs known and loved by everyone, including “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” and “I Could Have Danced All Night.”

The Gary-The Olivia production is being directed by Richard Rivas, who is also featured as Colonel Pickering. The show also features Kelly Briney as Eliza, Alistair Highet as Professor Higgins, and Thomas Camm as Alfred P. Doolittle.

Musical director is Fr Stephen Concordia, OSB.

Performances will be Fridays, August 5 and 12, at 7:30 pm, and Saturdays, August 6 and 13, at 2 and 7:30 pm.

There is no advance seating in the theater, and admission is by donation.

The Gary-The Olivia Theater is on the grounds of The Abbey of Regina Laudis, on Flanders Road in Bethlehem.
